A functional assessment gathers information from several areas of life to build a complete picture of how ADHD actually shows up for that person — not just whether symptoms are present, but how they play out day to day.
-
A functional assessment for ADHD in women typically includes an assessment interview, rating scales, and questionnaires to evaluate symptom severity and daily-functioning impact — alongside considerations specific to how ADHD shows up in women, such as:
Diverse symptom presentation: Women with ADHD often present with more inattentive symptoms, which can be less outwardly noticeable. They may experience internal restlessness (hyperactivity), chronic overwhelm, and emotional dysregulation more prominently than stereotypical external hyperactivity.
Later diagnosis: Women often seek diagnosis later in life (40s or 50s), after years of the burnout cycle or when noticing that coping mechanisms they've used their whole life are no longer effective.
Executive function challenges: Adult women carry higher demands of emotional labor and cognitive workload, which exacerbates existing executive function difficulties, such as task initiation, working memory, time management, and organization.
Hormonal shifts: Symptom presentation can fluctuate with hormonal changes throughout a woman's life.

ADHD testing is a comprehensive psychological evaluation done with the sole purpose of determining a medical diagnosis. It's performed by a psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, or physician, and it's important to remember that no single medical test can definitively diagnose ADHD. A functional assessment doesn't diagnose — it maps how ADHD is actually affecting your daily life, which can stand on its own or work alongside a formal diagnostic evaluation.
If you're looking for that kind of functional picture, the Clarity Assessment is built exactly for this — mapping how your brain is wired across a dozen skills, so you understand not just what you struggle with, but why.

I uniquely serve only adult women, and have a special focus on ADHD in perimenopause. My therapy services bridge the neuroscience of trauma, burnout, and brain-based differences with the practical strategies and accountability required to keep forward momentum in creating new patterns. My ADHD coaching is grounded in that same depth of training, but starts with the Clarity Assessment — a functional assessment that maps how your brain actually operates before recommending next steps, so nothing about your path forward is generic.
